Year 4 Assembly on Truth, Justice, Fairness and Equality
Year 4 presented a wonderful assembly last Friday. They taught us about the importance of seeking truth and to work for justice, fairness and equality. They celebrated the value of 'truthfulness' as we learned about wise King Solomon.
We also learned about Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She was a refugee who left Europe at a time of danger. Her family were Jewish and escaped the Holocaust to begin a new life in the USA. She worked hard at school and used her talents to learn about the law. She became a lawyer then went on to be a judge in the Supreme Court, becoming one of the first women to work in that role. She fought for equality and fairness and used her wisdom to support those in need.
We learned about the Holocaust, as it was Holocaust Memorial Day on Saturday 27th January. It marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.
We learned that many Jewish children escaped and, sadly, never saw their families again. The film “One Life” is currently out in the cinema and seeks to tell the truth about how brave men and women showed tremendous courage and compassion to rescue children from great suffering.
People across the world light candles on Holocaust Memorial Day to remember those who were killed and to make a stand against prejudice and hatred. Lighting a candle is representative of showing truth and peace in a time of darkness. The candle light gives hope. We, as humans, can also give hope to others and can make a difference where there is darkness.
